The sudden rise in water level of the Markanda river left the family marooned for approximately 13 hours before they were successfully rescued by the local administration.

The distress call came around Saturday midnight, when the trapped family members managed to inform local residents via a phone call about their situation. The residents, in turn, alerted the authorities. However, due to a high water flow in the river, rescue operations could not be immediately undertaken.

It was possible only after Sunday noon when some water level receded, that a JCB machine was employed to safely rescue the individuals from the island.
