Paonta Sahib witnessed a 100 per cent increase in road accidents in the month of January this year compared to past few years. Recent data reveals a disturbing trend as the accident rate has significantly increased. This has sparked alarm among the residents, prompting call for immediate action.

A total of 243 road accidents have been reported in Paonta Sahib from January 2022 to January 2024, in which 74 people have died and 324 have been hurt.

In the year 2022, 40 people were killed and 154 were injured in 131 accidents. In 2023, 29 people lost their lives in 130 road accidents while 162 people were injured. In January this year, a total of 5 people were killed in nine accidents and eight people have been injured.

Several factors are believed to be contributing to this alarming trend, including speeding, poor road conditions and lack of traffic enforcement. The increasing number of vehicles, coupled with narrow roads, inadequate signage is further exacerbating the problem.

Amit Kumar, Chamel Singh, Bishan Singh and other road safety activists are also calling for a multi-pronged strategy to tackle the problem. This includes stricter enforcement of traffic rules by implementing stricter checks on violations along with upgrading roads, adding proper signage, and identifying accident-prone areas. Educating drivers and pedestrians about rules, and providing comprehensive driver training programmes, especially for new drivers and commercial vehicle operators would also help in improving the situation.

Concerted efforts from authorities, communities and individuals are needed to reverse this trend.
