In a bid to provide a low-cost livelihood option to youth with less resources, the district administration of Sirmaur has developed a portable bag which can be assembled as a tent for setting up a shop within minutes and then folded back again.

A brainchild of Sirmaur Deputy Commissioner RK Pruthi, this idea has been conceptualised by Kala Amb-based Athens Life Science. “Amid economic hardships, unemployed youth, self-help groups, women etc, who want to sell their wares can opt for this ‘Mera bag, mera ghar’ option which allows them to set up their shop anywhere in any season,” said Pruthi.

The Prime Minister’s much-publicised slogan, ‘Vocal for local’, has been well emulated in this product, which will be launched as part of the “Made in Sirmaur” campaign by the district administration, said Pruthi.

To begin with, four such bags have been made keeping in view the basic requirements of a person. A space measuring 9 square feet is available for a user in this foldable shop which comprises two sections — a goods display section with shelves and a resting space/storage space where some light furniture can be kept and there is provision a mobile charging point. A solar power system has been provided for a fan and two bulbs. Weighing 32 kg, this bag can be assembled in 20 minutes and is made from waterproof material to withstand rains.

“Four such bags will be launched on October 2 on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary and people can avail this bag by economising its price as per their requirements,” said Pruthi.
