In order to check frequent traffic jams and ensure hassle-free movement of pedestrians in Chogan market on the Pathankot-Mandi national highway at Nurpur, the local administration, along with the police and municipal council authorities, took action against highway encroachers here on Monday. The police removed goods kept on the roadside and challaned two encroachers for repeat violations. A warning was also issued to the habitual offenders.

Nurpur SDM Gursimar Singh, who led the anti-encroachment drive, said this drive would continue in future as well so that commuters and highway users could get relief from the frequent traffic jams. He said the administration had fixed steel railing in front of small vegetable and fruit vends a few years ago, but the vendors were found crossing the railing to keep their goods on the highway, creating a traffic bottleneck.

The SDM said a temporary parking facility would be provided to the buyers who buy goods from the vendors within one week. He mentioned that the shopkeepers, who were encroaching the highway, had been warned to remove their goods or they would be confiscated.
