Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today said that the BJP and the Election Commission of India (EC) must address the issues raised by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi regarding irregularities in electoral rolls.

Sukhu, while talking to mediapersons here, said that rather than pointing a finger at him and twisting facts, the EC and the BJP must address the issue of irregularities in electoral rolls, as it was vital for democracy. “Rahul Gandhi is the Leader of the Opposition and in a democracy, the Opposition has the right to raise its voice in Parliament and outside. Democracy can survive only when the Opposition raises its voice so it is wrong on the part of the Central Government to crush the voice of the Opposition,” he added.

The Chief Minister said that Rahul Gandhi had raised a valid and pertinent issue and both ruling party and the EC should respond to that. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri supported the demand for ‘Digital Voter List’ initiated by Rahul Gandhi and said that it was not just a political issue but a resolution to protect the Constitution, ensure transparency and solidify the unwavering faith of the public. Any kind of disturbance in the election process, vote theft or manipulation of the voter list weakens the roots of democracy,” he claimed.
