In a relief to residents of the region, a gynaecologist, Dr Komal Sharma, joined the Nurpur Civil Hospital on Tuesday. The post of gynaecologist had been lying vacant in the hospital since August 2020.

Sharma was the fourth doctor ordered by the Health and Family Welfare Department to join the hospital. Before her, three doctors were transferred here but none of them joined as they either got the order cancelled or were posted to other hospitals or medical colleges, sources in the department said.

Due to the unavailability of gynaecologist, residents of Nurpur, Jawali, Indora and Fatehpur subdivisions of Kangra district, and Chuwari subdivision of Chamba district had been facing inconvenience for the last two years.

They said they weren’t able to get benefits of the Janani Surksha Yojana and were forced to get treatment in private hospitals.

To provide better healthcare in the region, the capacity of the hospital was upgraded from 100 to 200 beds. But many posts of specialist doctor are still lying vacant in the hospital. Even the post of radiologist has been lying vacant for several months.

The patients, visiting the hospital, demanded to fill the post immediately.
