After protests by Hindu outfits, illegal portion of shrine razed in Mandi city
The Muslim community demolished a portion of the mosque located on the Jail Road in Mandi today following protests by Hindu outfits against the illegal construction of a mosque at Sanjauli in Shimla.
A team of the Public Works Department (PWD) and the police arrived on the Jail Road, where the mosque committee had voluntarily demolished an unauthorised protection wall and a room built on the PWD land in front of the mosque.
The step was taken after a hearing at the Mandi Municipal Commissioner’s court last Tuesday. The Muslim Welfare Society had failed to present any record related to the construction of the mosque. The MC had issued a notice to the society’s president, instructing him to present an NOC from the PWD and the approved plan of the structure during the hearing.
Following discussions with the Muslim community, it was agreed that the unauthorised security wall would be dismantled.
Local residents allege that the Muslim Welfare Society has illegally occupied around 33 sq m of the PWD land. After receiving a report from a six-member committee, which was formed to inspect the site to assess the situation, the court of the Mandi MC commissioner is expected to deliver a verdict on the two unauthorised floors constructed above the mosque tomorrow.
