Agricultural scientists from the Directorate of Extension Education, Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University, have issued guidelines on the symptoms and management of yellow rust, a significant wheat disease in Himachal Pradesh.
Yellow rust, also known as stripe rust, typically appears between mid-December and early January, thriving in cold and humid weather. The disease can persist until the end of March, spreading widely under favorable conditions. Scientists explained that the disease manifests as yellow powdery stripes on wheat leaves, which can stain clothes when walking through heavily affected fields.
In severe cases, the disease extends to leaf sheaths, stems, and ears, causing leaves to dry prematurely and grains to shrink, resulting in substantial yield losses. By late March, as temperatures rise, the yellow stripes turn black.
Experts emphasised using disease-resistant wheat varieties and planting only the recommended varieties in specific areas to prevent outbreaks. Regular crop inspections should start in late December, particularly for wheat grown near trees, as such areas are more susceptible.
Farmers are advised to spray a 0.1% solution of the fungicide Propiconazole 25 EC if symptoms appear. The solution can be prepared by mixing 30 ml of fungicide in 30 liters of water for one kanal or 60 ml in 60 liters of water for one bigha. For effective coverage, a sticker should be used. Fungicide spraying should begin from late December to early February or when symptoms first appear. Repeat the spray at intervals of 15-20 days if the disease persists or spreads.
The experts urged farmers to ensure thorough application, covering all plant parts. They also emphasized avoiding the cultivation of non-recommended wheat varieties, which are more prone to yellow rust infections. This advisory aims to help farmers mitigate losses caused by yellow rust and ensure healthy wheat yields in the region.
