Agri varsity releases 13 crop varieties

The CSK Agriculture University, Palampur, today released 13 new crop varieties developed by the scientists of the institute. HK Chaudhary, VC, said the variety HPW 373 (Him Palam Gehun 3) had been recommended for late-sown rainfed conditions in low and mid-hills of Himachal Pradesh.

It had good chapatti-making parameters, coupled with a high degree of resistance against yellow rust and leaf rust, he said. The wheat variety would yield of 28-32 quintals per hectare, he said.

He said the barley variety HBL 804 (Him Palam Jau 2) was suitable for timely sown rainfed conditions in low and mid hills of Himachal Pradesh. It had a high degree of resistance to stripe and brown rusts, average green fodder yield of 25-30 quintals per hectare, grain yield of 20-25 quintals per hectare. The variety matured in about 170-185 days, he said.

The soybean variety Him Palam Hara Soya-1 (Himso-1685) has been recommended for rainfed conditions in mid-hill zone of Himachal. The mustard variety Trombay Him Palam Mustard-1 has been recommended for timely sown, irrigated conditions in low and mid-hill areas of Himachal. It has an average seed yield of 11.2 quintals per hectare and average oil content of 39.9 per cent, the VC said.

Other than these cereal and oil seed varieties, nine vegetable crop varieties had also been released. The VC expressed the hope that the state farmers would adopt the newly developed varieties, which would increase their harvest and income.
