Agri varsity scientist gets UK travel grant for cancer genome training

Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSKHPKV), Palampur, has earned recognition as Dr Subhash Verma, Professor in the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics, has been awarded a prestigious UK Travel Grant. He will attend an international training programme on cancer genome analysis, organised by Wellcome Connecting Science at the Wellcome Genome Campus, Hinxton (UK), and hosted at Khon Kaen University, Thailand, from October 26–31.

CSKHPKV Vice Chancellor Prof Naveen Kumar congratulated Dr Verma on this achievement, praising his commitment to advancing cancer research. He expressed confidence that the specialised training will sharpen Dr Verma’s expertise while also raising the global profile of the university.

The programme will provide hands-on exposure to cutting-edge tools in somatic genome studies, including mutation calling, driver gene identification, mutational signature analysis and RNA deconvolution.

Dr Verma has already made important contributions to veterinary oncology. His participation in the programme is expected to strengthen cross-disciplinary research, bridging human and veterinary oncology, with implications for detecting genetic mutations associated with canine cancers.
