Ahilyabai Holkar remembered as icon of ethical leadership, women empowerment
A special lecture titled “Ahilyabai Holkar: The Universal Icon of Women Empowerment” was organised on Tuesday at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla, to mark the 300th birth anniversary of Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar. The keynote address was delivered by Prof Chandrakala Padia, Chair of the Lokmata Ahilyabai Tricentenary Celebration Committee and former Chairperson of IIAS.
A distinguished political scientist and gender studies scholar, Prof Padia described Ahilyabai not merely as a queen but as an ethical visionary who turned governance into an instrument of public service. “She redefined power through compassion, justice and an unflinching commitment to duty,” she said.
Prof Padia outlined Ahilyabai’s inspiring journey — from widowhood within a patriarchal society to becoming one of India’s most respected monarchs. Her reign, she noted, combined administrative excellence with spiritual patronage. “Ahilyabai restored India’s sacred geography — from Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi to Somnath and Rameswaram — by sponsoring temples, ghats, rest houses and wells across the country,” she added.
Known for her deep empathy and accessibility, Ahilyabai held daily public hearings and was revered as a maternal ruler. “Her legacy is a beacon as nations today strive to integrate women’s voices in leadership. She thrived within the structures of patriarchy while also transforming them,” Prof Padia concluded.
Prof Shailendra Raj Mehta, Vice-Chairman of IIAS, delivered the inaugural remarks and Prof ShashiPrabha Kumar, Chairperson of the IIAS Governing Body, presided over the session, providing rich philosophical insights into Ahilyabai’s enduring relevance.
The event concluded with the National Anthem. Scholars, fellows and participants from across India attended the programme in person and online, making it a significant part of the national celebration of Ahilyabai Holkar’s tricentenary.
