Army, HPU explore collaboration in AI and cyber defence research

Col Ganesh Zape, a distinguished officer of the Indian Army currently serving as Colonel GS Technical and Futuristic at the Army Training Command (ARTRAC), visited the University Institute of Technology (UIT) at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) and proposed a strategic collaboration between the Indian Army and the university’s Centre for AI and Cyber Physical Systems.

During his meeting with Prof Mahavir Singh, Vice-Chancellor of HPU, Col Zape outlined a plan for funding support and joint research initiatives aimed at strengthening national defence through innovation and technology. The proposed partnership seeks to promote research, innovation-driven projects and skill development programmes in critical areas such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data analytics and defence technology.

The Vice-Chancellor welcomed the proposal and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to advancing research that contributes directly to national interests. He emphasised that such partnerships will bridge the gap between academic expertise and defence requirements, paving the way for a technologically self-reliant India.

Earlier in the day, Col Zape addressed UIT students, sharing insights into the evolving landscape of national defence and the crucial role of advanced technologies in safeguarding the nation. He urged students to explore careers in the defence sector, not only through military service but also as technologists contributing to the development of cutting-edge defence systems. He highlighted that young engineers and innovators hold the key to strengthening India’s security infrastructure and achieving self-sufficiency in defence technologies.

The visit was met with enthusiastic participation from students and faculty, who expressed keen interest in contributing to defence-related research and innovation.

Later, the Vice-Chancellor also interacted with the newly selected National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets of UIT. A total of 80 seats have been allotted to the UIT NCC Army Unit, with 26 cadets selected in the first phase this year. Prof Mahavir Singh congratulated the cadets and encouraged them to uphold values of discipline, leadership and social responsibility, core principles that embody the spirit of national service.
