The Committee for Preventing Drug and Substance Use at Government Arya College, Nurpur, in collaboration with the North Zone of State Taxes and Excise, organised a lecture on ‘Danger of drugs and social awareness’ on the college campus today. The purpose of the lecture was to educate students about the dangers of drug addiction and raise awareness about its impact on society.

Rakesh Kumar Bharti, Joint Commissioner of State Taxes and the Income Tax Department, North Zone, Palampur, delivered the lecture, focusing on the growing issue of drug addiction, particularly among young people aged 14 to 26 in the interstate Nurpur police district. He urged parents to stay vigilant about their children’s behaviour and activities. “Youngsters between the ages of 14 and 26 in the Nurpur area are falling prey to drugs and parents must be vigilant over the activities and changing behaviour of their wards,” he said.

Bharti highlighted the importance of raising awareness about the psychological, physical and social effects of drug abuse. He stressed the need for early identification of addiction and intervention, urging schools, parents and society to collaborate in awareness efforts. “There is an urgent need to work towards awareness programmes by schools, parents and society at large to prevent it from spreading and identify it at an early stage,” he added.

Dr Daljeet Singh, president of the college’s drug prevention committee, encouraged students to avoid drugs by refusing them when offered. “If someone offers you drugs just for taste’s sake, say ‘NO’ and walk away. Keep that person away from your company. No one can make you do something which you don’t want to do. Saying no to drugs keeps you in control of your temptation, body and your future,” he emphasised.

College principal Anil Thakur expressed gratitude to the Excise Department for organising the lecture and reinforced the college’s anti-drug campaign, stating that it has a simple but powerful message: “Say no to Drugs, Say yes to Life.” The lecture was attended by college faculty members, non-teaching staff and students.
