Attack on medical students: Chamba residents seeks action against ‘unruly’ students

Even as tensions simmer over the recent attack on medical students in Chamba, several residents of town the submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal, alleging frequent late-night nuisance and threatening behaviour by students of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College (PJNGMC).

The residents alleged that the students often created ruckus in an inebriated condition at night, disturbing the peace of the locality and sometimes even threatening locals. “It has become a regular pattern. Things have escalated to the point where some residents feel unsafe even stepping out after dark,” alleged Ravi Bhardwaj, a local.

Vishwajit, another local, alleged that on several occasions, drunk students not only misbehaved with the public but have also used foul language.

They demanded strict action against such students and called for stronger monitoring and restrictions to curb such behaviour. The memorandum calls for regular patrolling around the college hostel and stricter enforcement of discipline within the medical campus.

The complaint from residents comes a day after students of Chamba Medical College staged a protest against attack on six medical students near the old bus stand by local youths on Saturday night. One intern suffered critical injuries while five others sustained minor wounds. The assault, allegedly involving sharp weapons, triggered widespread outrage within the medical community.
