Abhishek Awasthi, Deputy Mayor of Greater Bendigo, Australia, and the first Indian-origin mayor in the city’s history, was honoured by the Mandi Municipal Corporation for his contributions to public service during a visit to his hometown, Mandi.

In an exclusive interview, Awasthi outlined his vision to strengthen ties between Mandi and Bendigo, focusing on education, tourism, sustainability and tackling drug abuse. He proposed student and educator exchange programmes to foster global exposure and innovative learning practices. Highlighting Mandi’s potential as a tourist destination, he emphasised showcasing its natural beauty and heritage in Bendigo to promote cultural and economic cooperation.

To combat unemployment in Mandi, Awasthi suggested introducing advanced vocational training programmes inspired by Bendigo’s models, equipping youth with essential skills. He also advocated sustainable development projects, including waste management and renewable energy initiatives, to address environmental challenges. Additionally, he proposed adopting Bendigo’s participatory governance model to improve transparency and community involvement in local governance.

Awasthi expressed deep concern over the rising drug abuse in Mandi, urging stronger community support for law enforcement, the establishment of helplines, and the deployment of dedicated forces to dismantle drug supply chains. He warned of the long-term social consequences if the issue remains unaddressed.

Reflecting on his journey from Mandi to Bendigo, where he moved in 2008 to study at La Trobe University, Awasthi emphasized the importance of giving back to his roots. As the founder of the Indian Association of Bendigo, he has been a champion for multiculturalism and community engagement.

Mandi Mayor Virender Bhatt supported Awasthi’s proposal for a Sister City partnership between Mandi and Bendigo, aiming to bring mutual benefits through collaboration in education, tourism, and sustainable development.

Awasthi’s vision represents a blend of local and global strategies, aiming to foster growth, cultural exchange, and social progress for his hometown and his adopted city.
