An avalanche struck the Gue region in the Kaza subdivision of Lahaul and Spiti district on Saturday, causing significant concern, but fortunately resulting in no casualties. The incident occurred while Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel were engaged in snow-clearing operation. The avalanche descended with great force but stopped just 200 feet from the ITBP camp, preventing any damage to the camp or injuries to the personnel.

According to an ITBP officer in Gue, the swift response and safety measures in place ensured the safety of all those involved in clearing the snow. Authorities said that the situation was under control and no further risk is posed by the avalanche. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Lahaul and Spiti has been monitoring the situation closely, ensuring that any additional threats are promptly addressed.

Meanwhile, the recent snowfall has caused significant disruption in Lahaul and Spiti, blocking the vital Manali-Leh highway between Manali and Keylong. This blockade, continuing for the past three days, has isolated the residents of Lahaul valley from the rest of the state. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully restored the Kaza -Sumdo and Tandi-Jispa roads for 4x4 vehicles, but efforts are ongoing to clear the Manali-Leh highway for regular traffic.

In addition to the road blockages, power supply in major parts of the Lahaul region has been severely disrupted with the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board working tirelessly to restore services.
