Awareness workshop on horticulture practices at Jaidevi senior sec school
An awareness workshop was successfully conducted at Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Jaidevi, under the ‘Apna Vidyalaya — The Himachal School Adoption Programme’ in Mandi district on Monday. The session was presided over by Horticulture Development Officer Anupama Mehra.
The primary focus of the workshop was to educate students about current horticultural practices, particularly those related to fruit-bearing plants. Mehra explained the techniques, types and benefits of mulching, and introduced the concept of drip irrigation. In a hands-on demonstration, students learned how to perform mulching using grass and cow dung —methods that help conserve moisture and protect fruit plants from drying out in the summer heat.
In addition to the horticulture training, the session also addressed the critical issue of substance abuse. Mehra urged students to stay away from addictive substances and informed them about their harmful effects on health and life. The children were further advised to include more vegetables and fruits in their daily diet while avoiding junk food for a healthier lifestyle.
Promoting holistic development, Mehra encouraged students to actively participate in physical activities such as sports, dance and yoga, emphasising the importance of a balanced life.
A key highlight of the workshop was a career counselling session. Mehra elaborated on how career counselling was a guiding process that helped students make informed decisions about their education and future. She emphasised the importance of understanding one’s interests and skills to choose a suitable career path. The event left a lasting impact on the students, equipping them with practical knowledge and life skills essential for a healthy and goal-oriented future.
