The Baddi police on Saturday arrested three persons — a Nigerian and his two accomplices, including a woman, from Delhi — for duping a local resident of Rs 7.26 lakh on the pretext of charging customs fee for receiving a parcel from the United Kingdom on June 11.
Archana had received a Facebook request from Ammu Ammu, which she accepted on May 10. Thereafter, she received a call from Delhi Parcel Agency on May 17 and caller Rani Mishra informed her about a parcel sent for her from England. She was asked to pay Rs 3.76 lakh as custom delivery charges, which she paid through Google Pay app.
She then received a fund transfer document of a New Delhi-based bank from Mark, who had befriended her on Facebook as Ammu Ammu. She was asked to pay another Rs 5 lakh to receive the parcel. She transferred Rs 3.50 lakh to an account through Google Pay. However, she later realised that she had been befooled.
Baddi DSP Navdeep Singh said Obeche Danial (29), a resident of Lagos in Nigeria, and
Rita Devi (35), both of whom were residing together at Uttam Nagar in Delhi and Rohit Thakur (29), who was residing at Extension Mohan Garden, Delhi, have been arrested and brought to Baddi.
He said the accused first observed the victim on Facebook by befriending her and then lured her to receive a parcel sent from the UK by him.
