Ban on tourism activities in Sissu from Jan 15 to Feb 28
In a move to preserve the sanctity and maintain peace of the region, all tourism activities will be prohibited in the Sissu panchayat area of tribal Lahaul and Spiti district, including the Sissu helipad, from January 15 to February 28. The decision, taken by the Sissu gram panchayat, Deity Raja Ghepan Committee, Devi Bhoti Committee, Labrang Gompa Committee and the women and youth welfare committees of the panchayat, aims to ensure a disturbance-free environment during the religious ceremonies.
The announcement was made during a meeting chaired by panchayat pradhan Rajiv. In support of the decision, a delegation met Lahaul and Spiti Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar and SDM Rajneesh Sharma yesterday to discuss the issue. The primary concern raised was to prevent traffic from being directed towards the Sissu helipad as its usage during this period could cause unnecessary noise and disruptions, especially during the worship and rituals associated with local deities. The local communities expressed their desire to maintain peace and uphold the cultural and religious practices that are vital to their traditions.
Panchayat pradhan Rajiv said the unanimous decision was taken to avoid any potential conflicts that might arise due to the influx of tourists, which could interfere with the spiritual activities and daily life of the locals. He emphasised that the period between January 15 and February 28 is particularly sacred and efforts are being made to ensure that the valley remains serene.
“The ban will cover all forms of tourism-related activities in the panchayat area. The district administration has been informed about our decision. We urged the DC to provide necessary support to the local community so we can preserve our age-old culture and tradition. The DC assured us that the administration will do needful for the purpose,” said the panchayat pradhan.
This initiative has been hailed as a step toward protecting the cultural heritage of the region, while also balancing the need for tourism development with the well-being of the local community.
