Swift migration of labourers to their states has left the industrial units grappling with labour shortage, especially in the state’s industrial hub of Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh (BBN), which houses 89 per cent of the state’s industry.
As many as 20,815 migrants from J and K, UP, MP, Bihar, Haryana, Uttrakhand, etc, have moved out till this evening from Solan district, informed Additional DC, Solan, Vivek Chandel.
The exodus was continuing as two of the four trains have left and two more were slated to ply on May 26 and May 28 to Mhaw and Faizabad. Today’s Shramik train destined for Bareilly was packed to capacity as 1,376 migrants from the BBN area and other industrial clusters had left.
“Being hard working and efficient, the migrants comprise nearly one-third of the industrial workforce in a small pharma unit. They are engaged in loading, unloading, packaging and working as machinists”, said Umesh Kumar, a senior executive of a company in Baddi.
Notably, 481 of the 590 pharma firms, 213 food processing and 453 of the 854 other ancillary industries have become operational. Barely 32,812 workers were engaged in 1,110 small, medium and large industries, indicating lack of capacity utilization. Likewise, in the 7,110 micro and cottage industries, barely 19,133 workers were engaged in the state.
