Shimla, August 7
The Jubilee Mountaineering Expedition team from the Bishop Cotton School (BCS) has scaled 20,031-foot Mt UT Kangri in Ladakh.
“The BCS prides itself on challenging young people to be the best version of themselves. This is an exceptional achievement by the 2024 team, which will bond them together for a lifetime. They all had to work hard to make the trip, but even harder to make it a success,” said BCS Director Simon Weale.
It is for the first time in 25 years of the BCS mountaineering expedition’s history that all team members have scaled a peak, without anyone being forced to drop out due to altitude sickness.
The team comprising nine students and two instructors scaled the peak on August 5.
Expedition leader Amod Talwalkar, said, “It’s unbelievable as the entire team scaled the peak in the silver jubilee year of BCS’ mountaineering history.” Mt Kangri is a challenging climb, so the team spent a week acclimatising, visiting temples and mountain ranges. Every year, the best climbers at BCS, the Pargiyal Mountaineering Club, attempt at least one 6,000 metres plus peak. The first expedition took place in 1999, so this year marks the silver jubilee of the club.
