Students of Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Sahla, in Bhatiyat, visited the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha at Tapovan today to witness the proceedings of the ongoing Winter Session. Before entering the House, the students met Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania, who explained to them the Assembly’s functions and its importance in a democratic system.

Responding to the students’ queries about the day’s proceedings, the role of the Legislature and the significance of the Speaker’s position, Pathania said the Vidhan Sabha is the law-making body of the state. “Just as a school has different classes, the state has different regions and each region elects a representative called an MLA. Together, these MLAs form the Legislative Assembly. Its main responsibility is to make laws necessary to run the state, just like rules are needed to run a school,” he explained.

The Speaker added that the political party that wins the majority of seats forms the government, which is headed by Chief Minister. The MLAs question the government on issues concerning the people and the government is accountable for its actions. He added that the annual budget outlines the government’s plans and expenditure, which is then passed by the Assembly.

Pathania highlighted the Speaker’s role in maintaining order in the House, similar the principal’s job in school. He noted that parties not in government form the Opposition, whose duty is to keep a check on the government’s work and raise public concerns. He described the Assembly as a vital pillar of democracy, enabling citizens to participate in governance through their elected representatives.
