Bill to raise marriageable age of girls to 21 introduced in Himachal Vidhan Sabha

The Prohibition of Child Marriage (Himachal Pradesh Amendment) Bill, 2024 was tabled in the Vidhan Sabha today to increase the minimum age for marriage of girls to 21.

Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dhani Ram Shandil introduced the Bill in the Vidhan Sabha today. Presently, the minimum age for marriage of girls in Himachal Pradesh is 18 years and the state government had constituted a committee to look into the issue.

“The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, was enacted to provide for the prohibition of solemnization of child marriages and for matters connected but in today’s world women are progressing in every field and early marriages act as a hindrance not only in the progress of their career but also in their physical development,” the Bill reads.
