The BJP on Wednesday staged a symbolic protest in the Moginand industrial area in the Nahan Assembly constituency of Sirmaur district against the deteriorating condition of roads. BJP state president Rajeev Bindal led the protest and panchayat representatives, local residents, party office-bearers, and workers from various panchayats of the area.

Bindal, while addressing the gathering, said that roads were considered the lifelines of the hills but during the present Congress government, these lifelines had turned into a source of despair. “The state roads are replete with potholes due to the inefficiency and negligence of the government,” he added.

Bindal alleged that the condition of roads in the Nahan constituency, including both major highways and rural routes, had become extremely poor, posing a constant threat of accidents. He added that the silence of the government and the local MLA over the issue reflected their indifference towards public hardships.

He warned that if the roads in the Nahan region were not repaired within the next 15 days, people would be forced to launch an agitation. He added that for over a year, roads had been riddled with large potholes and instead of proper repairs, soil was being put on it to cover the damaged portions. “During the monsoon, this soil turns into slush, and after the rain, it creates clouds of dust, making life miserable for residents and commuters alike,” he added.

Bindal alleged that those living along these roads were suffering due to dust pollution, while regular commuters were facing inconvenience. He accused the Congress government and its representatives of turning a blind eye to public grievances. He asked whether Congress leaders, who travel through the area, fail to notice the appalling road conditions. “Their silence clearly shows that they are unconcerned about the suffering of the common people,” he added.
