The BJP today demanded the handing over of the case of the death of Vimal Negi, Chief Engineer of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (HPPCL), to the CBI.

The Shimla district BJP today organised a candlelight march from Shere Punjab to the Telegraph Office to seek justice for Vimal Negi, whose family had alleged that he was harassed by HPPCL officers. Former minister Suresh Bhardwaj along with other BJP leaders and office-bearers paid floral tributes to Negi, whose body was found in the Gobind Sagar Lake 10 days after he went missing.

“The police are facing difficulties in recording the statements of two senior HPPCL officers, who have been named in the FIR. Vimal Negi’s family, too, has demanded that the inquiry be handed over to the CBI,” said Bhardwaj. BJP leaders said that the police had not been able to trace one of the officers, whose bail plea the High Court of Himachal Pradesh had rejected.

BJP leader Sanjay Sood said that not only Vimal Negi’s family but also HPCCL employees and engineers associations had alleged irregularities in some power projects. “Doubts are being expressed over the impartiality of the inquiry being conducted into Negi’s death. If the government has nothing to fear, why is it shying away from a CBI inquiry,” he added.
