CBI gets five-day remand of ED officer
The CBI Court in Chandigarh has granted a five-day remand of Vishal Deep, an officer of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), to the CBI in connection with an alleged bribery case. The officer was presented before the court by Ambala Jail authorities following a production warrant issued against him. Public Prosecutor Narender Singh requested the remand to uncover a larger conspiracy in the case, mentioning that certain bribe amounts have not yet been recovered and the mobile phone used to make calls demanding the bribe is still to be seized. Additionally, the accused's voice sample is yet to be compared with the recorded one at the CFSL.
Defence counsels Abhey Joshi and Manpret Singh Kler opposed the remand, requesting the court to monitor the investigation due to allegations made by the accused against a DSP-level officer from the CBI. They argued that the investigation had already been conducted and further remand was unnecessary. After hearing the arguments, the Special Judge of the CBI court granted a five-day remand. Earlier, the court had rejected Vishal Deep's anticipatory bail application on Wednesday.
The CBI had filed an FIR against Vishal Deep, the former Assistant Director-II (Intelligence) in Shimla, on December 22, 2024, based on complaints from the directors of two educational institutions. The CBI alleged that Vishal Deep extorted money by threatening the directors with arrest during an investigation he was overseeing.
