Chamba, April 15

The Chamba district administration and NHPC Ltd signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the execution of a pilot hydrogen project in the area of mobility here today. Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur was present on the occasion.

Group General Manager of the NHPC AK Pathak and Chamba Deputy Commissioner DC Rana signed the MoU. The Chief Minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that India would go carbon neutral by 2070 and by 2030, India would generate 500 GW from non-fossil fuel sources, which would be 50 per cent of the total installed capacity. This initiative of the state government in cooperation with the NHPC would be a milestone in this regard.

Thakur said the NHPC had taken up the green hydrogen project at Chamba as an initiative and an MoU had been signed between the state government and the company for the execution of pilot hydrogen project in the area of mobility.

He said a grid connected ground-mounted solar PV plant of 300 KW on 200 acres would be installed and the power generated would be used in the electrolyser to produce hydrogen. About nine to 12 litres of water would be utilised to produce one kilogram of hydrogen fuel.

Chamera-II power station General Manager SK Sandhu said that under this initiative of NHPC Chairman AK Singh, the produced hydrogen would be stored in a fuel tank of 20 kg capacity of mobility such as a bus, car etc. From the fuel tank, hydrogen would go to the hydrogen fuel cells installed in the bus as part of the main engine.
