Chamba dist health dept raises awareness on AIDS, TB, drugs

The Health Department, Chamba, observed International Youth Day with a series of awareness activities focusing on HIV/AIDS prevention, drug abuse eradication and tuberculosis control.

The programme began with Chamba Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal flagging off an awareness rally featuring students from Shakuntla Memorial Nursing College, Sarol. The DC also distributed bin bags to taxi union members and sensitised them on HIV/AIDS, TB prevention and sanitation practices.

A special awareness camp for students was later held under the chairmanship of Chief Medical Officer Dr Bipen Thakur. In his address, Dr Thakur urged youth to take an active role in social causes and help curb substance abuse, drug trafficking and other social evils. He stressed that HIV/AIDS is still incurable and that awareness is the most effective safeguard. He outlined symptoms, prevention methods, and transmission modes and encouraged regular health check-ups, including voluntary HIV testing.

Dr Thakur added that HIV testing for pregnant women is a priority in Chamba, with free and confidential facilities available at ICTC centres. Information can also be accessed through the toll-free AIDS control helpline 1097. “It is our duty to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS and inspire others to stay informed,” he said.

As part of the event, a poster-making competition was held, in which Nikita won first place, Sakshi Gill secured second and Nisha came third.

The programme was attended by District Programme Officer Dr Harit Puri, Information & Communication Officer CR Thakur, BCC Coordinator Deepak Joshi, Counsellor Sapna Kumari, Chain Singh and Itul Kumar.
