Chamba hosts event to mark World AIDS Day

A district-level event commemorating World AIDS Day was held on Friday at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) campus in Chamba under the chairmanship of Dr Karan Hitaishi. The event aimed to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, expresses solidarity with those living with the condition, and honor lives lost to AIDS-related illnesses.

Dr Hitaishi highlighted that World AIDS Day, observed globally on December 1 since 1988, focuses on prevention, treatment, and care for HIV/AIDS. He emphasised the importance of awareness, noting that while HIV remains incurable, advancements in medical science allow those affected to lead healthy lives with effective management.

Providing regional statistics, Dr Hitaishi shared that Himachal Pradesh has 7,500 people living with HIV, including 160 in Chamba district. He announced that antiretroviral therapy (ART) medications, previously available only at Tanda Medical College, would soon be accessible at the Government Ayurvedic Medical College in Chamba. Additionally, the government provides free bus travel for HIV-positive individuals and a companion to access ART services, along with Rs 1,500 monthly financial aid for patients.

Dr Hitaishi stressed the goals set by the National AIDS Control Organization for 2030: ensuring 95% of the population knows their HIV status, 95% of diagnosed individuals receive ART, and 95% of ART users achieve suppressed viral loads. He urged attendees to utilize Integrated Counseling and Testing Centers (ICTCs), available in Chamba district at locations such as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College and Civil Hospitals in Bharmour, Tissa, Kihar, and Chowari.

The event also featured competitions to engage and educate participants. In the speech competition organized by DIET trainees, Sonia secured first place, followed by Priyanshika and Ajay. In the face painting competition, Man Singh, Rashi, and Ankush claimed the top three spots, respectively. Winners were awarded mementos for their efforts.
