Chamba, March 6
To mitigate the threats of Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF), Chamba district will now have an integrated warning mechanism for early warning of danger of increasing water level and flow in the Ravi river due to heavy rains unexpectedly during rainy season.
In addition to the dams constructed on the rivers, this web-based system can be operated from the district-level disaster management centre, besides state-level disaster management centre.
Presiding over a meeting with regard to GLOF here to review the steps to be taken for preparing an accurate and effective system for prevention of flood damage caused by the eruption of glacier lakes, Deputy Commissioner DC Rana said for setting up this system on the Ravi basin, the NHPC management had started the work.
“This modern system will be designed in collaboration with IIT-Roorkee. Apart from hydropower project constructed by the NHPC on the Ravi basin, private hydroelectric projects will also be linked with this system,” the DC said.
He said hydropower projects constructed or under construction in other areas of the district had also been instructed to make such arrangements of early warning systems.
He said in such a new warning system, there would also be a voice message besides sirens so that people living in sensitive places along the river and those walking towards the river could be able to hear the danger warning signal immediately.
The DC asked all SDMs of the district to update the data of bridges on the rivers in addition to sensitive areas under their jurisdiction so that all data could be brought on the digital map.
