Khajund Dal Lake in Chamba is set to undergo a major revamp with an estimated investment of Rs 2.75 crore. Modelled after the renowned Khajjiar, often referred to as the ‘Mini Switzerland,’ the lake is expected to become a key tourist destination in the region. The Block Development Office, Mehla, has submitted a proposal to the state government through the district tourism office for approval.

Once sanctioned, the project will pave the way for enhanced tourism infrastructure, potentially boosting local employment opportunities. Mehla BDO Basheer Khan stated that the proposed development includes trekking routes, guest accommodations, potable water facilities, improved road connectivity, and eco-friendly huts.

The beautification of the lake, along with essential tourist amenities, is expected to attract a significant influx of visitors, fostering economic growth in the region. Nestled in Saho Panchayat, about 20 kilometres from Chamba, and surrounded by snow-clad peaks, lush green forests, and pristine landscapes, Khajund Dal Lake possesses immense tourism potential.

However, like many scenic locations in Chamba, its lack of connectivity and essential facilities has kept it from gaining widespread recognition. Officials believe that with strategic intervention and government support, such hidden gems can be placed firmly on the global tourism map. District Tourism Officer Rajiv Mishra mentioned that the proposal for developing Khajund Lake has been forwarded to the state government for approval.

“If sanctioned, work will commence on the beautification of the lake and the provision of necessary facilities for visitors,” he said.

Meanwhile, local representatives have long been advocating for the development of Khajund Lake as a tourist hub. Manoj Kumar Manu, a member of the Zila Parishad from Karian Ward, emphasised the economic benefits of the project.

“I have repeatedly raised this issue in the Zila Parishad meetings and with the government. If developed properly, this initiative will not only increase tourist footfall but also create employment opportunities for the youth,” he said. The ambitious plan for Khajund Dal Lake aligns with the broader efforts of the administration to harness Chamba’s untapped tourism potential. With the promise of better connectivity and world-class facilities, officials are optimistic that the lake will soon emerge as a major attraction, bringing prosperity to the local community.
