To manage the heavy influx of vehicles in Chitkul and Sangla — two of the most popular tourist destinations in Kinnaur district — the Kinnaur police have set up a seasonal police check post in Chitkul, effective from June 1, 2025.

Bhaba Nagar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Raj Kumar inaugurated the check post, which will remain operational until November.

Speaking at the inauguration, the SDPO said, “Kinnaur is a key tourism hub, attracting large numbers of domestic and international tourists. With the growing popularity of Sangla and Chitkul, hundreds of vehicles head to these destinations daily. This check post has been established to regulate traffic, maintain law and order and curb any illegal activities.”

The SDPO further said three police personnel will be stationed at the post round-the-clock to assist both tourists and local residents.

He also announced that Dumti, a region beyond Chitkul that was previously off-limits to tourists, has now been opened for tourism. “With this check post in place, we expect a significant improvement in traffic flow and public safety in the region,” he added.
