Shimla: Citing youth’s murder, Opposition says law & order ‘deteriorating’

The issue of murder of a youth (21), right opposite the police reporting room on The Mall last night, and the deteriorating law and order situation in the state echoed in the Vidhan Sabha today.

• Citing rules, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Pathania asked legislators to ensure proper dress code. “Two MLAs — Hans Raj and Vinod Kumar — are wearing T-shirts with Namo Hat-trick written on it,” he said. The MLAs are expected to wear decent and appropriate clothes, he pointed out.

Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur raised the issue through a Point of Order in the House. “The murder of a youth, working in a restaurant, life threat to MLA Sudhir Sharma and attack on former Bilaspur MLA Bamber Thakur is a clear reflection of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state,” said Thakur. He regretted that despite the brutal attack on the youth right next to the reporting room, the police remained unaware and the accused fled from the scene of crime.

Speaker Vidhan Sabha Kuldeep Pathania said the issue can be raised during the cut motion on law and order situation and the Question Hour must be allowed to be taken up. Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan, replying in the absence of the Chief Minister, said the death of the boy was a very unfortunate and serious incident and the government was seized of the matter.

“MLA Sudhir Sharma is himself present in the House and as such the BJP should not become his spokesperson,” he remarked. Chauhan said that the government was ready to answer all the issues. He suggested the opposition can raise the issue of law and order in the state through cut motions.

Dharamsala MLA Sudhir Sharma raised the issue of life threat to him with the DGP. “Not only in my case but keeping all such cases in mind, action should be taken. The government must also clarify its stand on the issue of construction of the campus of the Kangra Central University so that I can apprise my constituents of the situation,” Sharma added. Chopal MLA Balbir Verma said the 21-year-old Munish from Chopal was attacked as he stepped out from the restaurant where he was working.

“Himachal police failed to prevent the accused from fleeing Himachal despite the incident taking place right before the Reporting room,” said Verma.
