‘Covid patients are humans too’

Poor civic amenities have irked inmates at the dedicated Covid care centre at the NIT, Hamirpur. There is hardly any cleaning in the corridors of the centre. We don’t know whether the lenin is being cleaned. The condition of the beds is bad. I hope the district administration and health officials will look into the situation and offer better facilities. We are also human beings, after all. —– An inmate

Choked drain a nuisance

A choked drain at Forest Chowk in Shamshi has become a nuisance for residents and passersby. Neither the Public Works Department nor the local panchayat is paying any attention. The drain has not been cleaned for several months and a foul smell emanates from the dirty water. Garbage is also scattered on the ground adjacent to the drain. The garbage and drain pose a health hazard and this should be cleared at the earliest or the condition will worsen during the rainy season. Vinod Kumar, Kullu.

Webinar at Shoolini University

A session on ‘The Writer’s Choice’ was organised by Belletristic, the literature society of the Department of English, at Shoolini University. Renowned Indian poet and author Keki Daruwalla spoke about Dante’s Divine Comedy, the Cantos of Inferno and also read out some of his own poems. He had imagined his recent ‘Naishapur to Babylon’, published in 2018, to be his last poetry book, but the pandemic-induced lockdown compelled him to write verse again. Prof Manju Jaidka, HoD, said this had helped re-discover the classics of literature, spread awareness and love for literature, particularly among youngsters, who have strayed away from books and authors because of many distractions.

Janmashtami celebrated

Comet Mensa Public School, Dehri, organised an e-class to celebrate Janmashtami. Students created beautiful ‘torans’, ‘Krishan-jhula’ and greeting cards using ribbons, ‘mauli’, coloured paper and flowers. Students also decorated ‘matki’, ‘thali’ and flute. Junior kids looked attractive in the dresses of Krishna, Radha, Balram and Sudhama. Meanwhile, DAV Public School, Nagrota Surian, also celebrated the festival. While teachers performed a yajana at the school, children sent their pictures dressed as Lord Krishna to the school.

NSUI pays tribute to Nasir Khan

NSUI and Congress state president Kuldeep Rathore paid tributes to student leader Nasir Khan on his 32nd death anniversary on Tuesday. The office-bearers and workers of the Congress, the Youth Congress and the NSUI wore black bands and observed a two-minute silence. Khan was assaulted in his hostel at Himachal Pradesh Uuniversity, and was fatally injured. He died at the PGI on this day in 1988, and ever since the NSUI observes August 11 as ‘black day’.
