Road full of potholes

Residents of the Chakkar area in Shimla have to travel on a road full of potholes. The callous attitude of the authorities can be gauged from the fact that the potholes have been there for almost a year. Two-wheeler riders and walkers face a great inconvenience while commuting on the stretch. It is high time the authorities got the the road repaired.

Low voltage a bane

Residents of Dharwal village in Indora have been battling with the problem of low voltage for the past seven months. They even approached the authorities of the HPSEBL, but nothing happened. The residents also met local MLA Reeta Dhiman twice, but that too did not help. Students are the worst-sufferers as they are unable to study. A new transform should be installed. The authorities should resolve the problem at the earliest as exams are going on. Surinder Thakur, Kangra

Road in need of repairs

Residents of Pannga village under Riyada panchayat in Kullu district have been urging the authorities to metal the road from Shangchar to Pannga. The village road is dusty and needs immediate repairs. The state government has approved Rs 2.75 crore for the work and the Public Works Department should start the metalling soon. Doon school holds ‘Cyclothon-2020’

To promote the “Fit India Movement”, Doon Valley Public School, Nalagarh, organised “Cyclothon-2020”. The event was flagged off by Nalagarh SDM Prashant Deshta in the presence of Nalagarh RTO Ravinder Sharma and chairman of the school Rajeev Sharma. More than 150 participants cycled 10 km. The SDM stressed the need for conducting more such events to create awareness among locals. The school chairman said the objective of the event was to create awareness about fuel conservation, protection of environment and promotion of cycling. Principal Devendera Mahal congratulated the staff and students.

Una boy sets record in cycling

Gurdev Thakur, a Class VIII student of DAV Centenary Public School, Una, has become the youngest bicycle rider to complete 45-km cycling in the hills. He successfully completed the trek from Una to Badar in two hours and 43 minutes. His name has entered the International Book of Records for World Record of Excellence. His coach Raj Kumar said Gurdev was practising to cycle on treks from Una to Shimla and Una Delhi.

Slogan-writing contest

Central University Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) organised a slogan-writing competition on the topic “Clean India, Healthy India”. Journalism students took part in the contest. Minakshi won the first prize during the competition, while Nisha Dhiman and Nikitha Jagota won the second and third prizes.

SFI submits memorandum

The SFI on Friday submitted a memorandum to the Registrar, Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), seeking a rollback of the fee hike by the International Centre for Distance Education and Open Learning (ICDEOL).

Campus president of the SFI Ravinder Chandel termed the 10 per cent fee hike for graduation and postgraduation by the ICDEOL unjustified. He said students from weaker sections sought admission to the ICDEOL, therefore, the hike was illogical. “Instead of providing free education to everyone, the BJP-led government was trying to crush the voice of the students, which will not be tolerated,” he added.

Nukkad natak by students

Himalayan Public Senior Secondary School, Sarkaghat, Mandi district, organised a nukkad natak on “Beti Bachao, Beti Padao”. Students presented a colourful programme, highlighting the need for providing level-playing field for girls. Social worker Tripta Chandel was the chief guest. Salvi Pathania, an old student, spoke on the declining sex ratio. All teachers and principal Prem lata Dogra were present.

National Girl Child Day celebrated

National Girl Child Day was celebrated at DAV Centenary Public School, Mandi. Students made placards and took part in a painting contest. They also took out an awareness rally on the campus.
