Clear backlog of GST returns: Govt

The GST council in its 38th meeting held on December 18 had announced a late fee waiver till January 10, 2020, as a one-time measure to enable taxpayers clear the backlog of GST returns which have not been filed from July 2017 to November 2019.

A spokesperson of the Excise and Taxation Department said here today that in view of the waiver, taxpayers had been requested to clear any backlog by January 10. In case the taxpayers fail to use the opportunity, a late fee of Rs 50 per day for non-filing of GSTR-1 up to a maximum of Rs 10,000 per GSTR-1 will be levied as per existing provisions.

He said the government further plans to block the facility of e-way bill facility for those tax payers who had not filed their form of GSTR-1 for two tax periods.
