Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday hit back at the BJP over its criticism of the state government’s decision to restart lotteries in Himachal Pradesh.

“I am shocked at the mentality of BJP leaders. They are reading too much into this proposal without realising that several BJP-ruled states, including Madhya Pradesh and Goa, run lotteries. Even the CPM-ruled Kerala operates them—so why the hue and cry?” Sukhu said.

Clarifying the nature of the plan, he stated that the sale of lotteries would be conducted entirely online, not through kiosks. “It is an individual’s choice whether to participate in online gaming or not. Even now, people engage in platforms like Dream11—it’s their decision,” he added.

The CM emphasised that while the cabinet had approved the proposal, a final decision would follow only after weighing all pros and cons. “I fail to understand what Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur says or thinks. He should respond in a responsible manner,” he remarked. BJP leaders, including Thakur, have sharply criticised the move, calling it a misguided step. However, Sukhu argued that lotteries could help generate Rs 50–Rs 100 crore annually for the state’s revenue.

In other cabinet decisions, Sukhu announced approval for operating flights from the Dhalli heliport near Sanjauli. Services on the Shimla– Chandigarh and Rampur–Chandigarh routes will soon be launched to boost air connectivity in the state.

Addressing a query on the court’s recent order regarding forest encroachments, Sukhu assured farmers and fruit growers of the government’s support. “We have full sympathy with them and will examine the court order carefully,” he said.

Sukhu reiterated that all steps, whether on lotteries or air connectivity, aim to enhance state revenue and infrastructure, while ensuring that public choice and legal considerations remain central to decision-making.
