Minister for Panchayati Raj, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Virender Kanwar unfurled the national flag on the 71st Republic Day celebrations at Thodo Ground at Solan yesterday.

He took salute of an impressive march past by the contingents of the police, NSS and Home Guard jawans.

Addressing a gathering, he said the state government was committed to strengthening the rural economy and the Chief Minister would soon inaugurate a cow sanctuary developed at Kotla Barog village in Sirmaur district. The government was providing shelter to the deserted animals by opening such sanctuaries in various places.

He said two more cow sanctuaries were being developed at Handa Khundi in Nalagarh at a cost of Rs 3 crore and at Thana Kalan in Una district at a cost of Rs 1.69 crore. Efforts were afoot to open such sanctuaries in Hamirpur and Kangra districts as well.

The minister also elaborated on the developmental initiatives of the government in various fields.

He later honoured employees, students and sportsmen who excelled in various fields.
