Committee on shifting of stray animals will be formed: DC
Shimla, July 29
Shimla Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anupam Kashyap here today said a committee will be formed at subdivisional level under the chairmanship of the Subdivisional Magistrate (SDM) for transporting stray animals to gaushalas (cow shelters).
“The committee will include the SDM, representatives from the Animal Husbandry and Panchayati Raj departments. It will first identify locations where stray animals are present and then transport these to the nearest cow shelters,” he said. Chairing a joint meeting of the District Animal Husbandry Department and the Cow Service Commission, the DC said letters will be sent to all subdivisional officers with instructions to form these committees.
“The apple season has begun, leading to increased traffic on roads. The presence of stray animals on roads increases the likelihood of accidents,” said the DC.
He said 911 animals can be currently accommodated in various gaushalas across the district, while 2,381 animals have already been sheltered.
The DC said the Animal Husbandry Department was the backbone of the rural economy.
