In a landmark initiative to combat substance abuse and support individuals on their path to recovery, Himachal Pradesh’s first model de-addiction and rehabilitation centre is set to be established in Kotla Barog village of Dado Deoria panchayat in Sirmaur district. With all necessary approvals and formalities completed, the construction work is expected to commence in March this year.

The state-of-the-art facility, being developed at a cost of Rs 5.34 crore, has already received an initial installment of Rs 1 crore from the government. The centre will feature 100 beds and will be equipped with a team of specialised doctors, trained nurses and dedicated support personnel, ensuring round-the-clock medical and psychological care for individuals undergoing rehabilitation.

The new rehabilitation centre will be housed in the Veterinary Pharmacist Training Centre building of the Animal Husbandry Department in Kotla Barog, a facility that had remained non-functional for years. To support the centre’s expansion, additional land from the Kotla Barog Cow Sanctuary has been allocated, giving the site a new purpose as a beacon of hope for individuals battling addiction. The initiative is a significant step in the government’s commitment to tackling substance abuse, utilising existing resources while addressing a critical social and public health concern.

Designed to provide a supportive and structured recovery environment, the de-addiction and rehabilitation centre will feature comfortable living spaces, nutritious meals and dedicated entertainment and recreational areas. A well-stocked library, gym and sports facilities will be included to promote a balanced lifestyle, while spaces for meditation and yoga will help support mental and emotional well-being. The centre will also offer skill development and vocational training programmes, equipping individuals with essential tools for self-reliance. Comprehensive services such as in-house treatment, clothing, food and laundry will ensure a smooth and dignified rehabilitation process.

Sirmaur District Welfare Officer Vivek Arora emphasised that all necessary formalities have been completed following Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s announcement last year. The initiative, he said, aligns with the government’s vision to provide effective rehabilitation and social reintegration programmes for those struggling with addiction. He further highlighted that this centre would not only provide medical care but also empower individuals with skills and confidence to reintegrate into society, helping them reclaim their lives with dignity and purpose.

Superintending Engineer of the Public Works Department, Sirmaur, Arvind Sharma, confirmed that the tender process for the construction has been finalised, and all preparations are in place. Expressing confidence in the project’s progress, he stated that construction is expected to begin in March this year.

The establishment of Himachal Pradesh’s first model de-addiction and rehabilitation centre marks a significant step towards creating a healthier, more supportive society. With comprehensive treatment, structured rehabilitation and skill development programmes, this initiative aims to break the cycle of addiction and help individuals rebuild their lives with self-reliance, hope and a renewed sense of purpose.
