Court cracks down on drug trade, convicts 4th peddler in month
In a significant breakthrough against the drug trade in Nurpur police district, the designated district courts have convicted four habitual offenders under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act within a month. Among them is Dalbiro, wife of Ajay, a notorious drug peddler from Chhanni under the Indora police station jurisdiction. On Tuesday, she was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 1 lakh for her involvement in a 2017 drug case.
Dalbiro was arrested on May 30, 2017, when Indora police recovered 6.50 gm of heroin (chitta) and Rs 3,500 in drug money from her possession. Police records reveal that this was not her first encounter with the law. Before this conviction, she had been arrested multiple times for drug-related offences, with cases dating back to January 2017. She was booked again in May and July 2018, followed by further arrests in June 2021 and June 2022. Facing five more trials under the NDPS Act, she could potentially receive additional convictions in the coming months.
What makes this case particularly alarming is that Dalbiro is not the only member of her family involved in drug peddling. Her entire family has been deeply entrenched in the illegal trade, operating in the interstate border areas under Damtal and Indora police jurisdiction. Her son, Mithun, has been involved in drug peddling for over nine years, with as many as 14 NDPS cases registered against him in Nurpur, Indora, Damtal, and Pathankot in neighbouring Punjab. Her husband, Ajay, was also booked under the NDPS Act in June 2016.
The pattern of criminal activity extends further. Her daughter-in-law, Asha, wife of Mithun, has been arrested twice by Damtal police in drug-related cases. Her second son, Govinda, is a repeat offender as well, with three NDPS cases filed against him by Indora police. Even her daughters have been implicated in drug peddling. Her married daughter, Garo, wife of Jagdish Raj, was arrested in March 2021 by Pathankot police after being caught with chitta, while her second daughter, Nandini, wife of Subhash, was arrested by Indora police in May 2018 under similar charges.
Nurpur Superintendent of Police Ashok Ratan confirmed that Dalbiro’s family is well-known in police records for their involvement in drug trafficking.
