The involvement of relatives and domestic helps in cyber crime has added a new dimension to crime and the cyber crime branch has cautioned people against sharing vital information with relatives and aides.

There has been a spurt in cyber crime cases and 1,264 complaints have been received in the cyber crime police station in the last five months.

The investigation exposed the involvement of associates in many cases and in one particular case, an 81-year-old woman in Shimla was duped of Rs 3.50 lakh through online fraud and after investigation, her servant was arrested.

The cyber police arrested Deep Ram, servant of Sunita Bharadwaj (81), who registered the complaint, alleging that her money was withdrawn through net banking from her account.

In another case, Surat Ram of Rampur, Shimla district, complained that Rs 3.50 lakh had been withdrawn from his account and investigation revealed that his nephew Lalit had withdrawn the money, using his mobile phone, said ASP, Cyber Police Station, Narvir Singh Rathore.

Narvir advised internet users to keep their mobile phones, laptops, computers and other equipment safe by passwords and immediately change these after any employee was sacked to save these from being misused.

A total number of cyber crime cases was 1,638 during 2019 but this year, 1,264 complaints had been received and acting promptly, the cyber police had got Rs 25 lakh recovered, he added.
