Cycling lanes in Glen, Sanjauli, Jakhu soon
In a bid to promote fitness and protect youth from drug abuse, the Municipal Corporation of Shimla is set to construct cycling lanes in the town. Mayor Surender Chauhan announced that the first phase will see cycling tracks developed in Sanjauli, Glen and Jakhu. A meeting with concerned officials will be held soon to discuss the project.
Chauhan emphasised that cycling was one of the best exercises, and the availability of cycling lanes would encourage people to use bicycles for commuting. He added that these tracks would not only promote a healthy lifestyle but also keep the youth engaged in positive activities, preventing them from falling into drug addiction.
In addition to cycling lanes, the corporation is also focusing on developing new playgrounds in the town. Chauhan noted that the limited number of playgrounds has led many young people towards bad habits, including drug consumption. To address this, councillors have been directed to identify vacant land in their respective wards that can be turned into playgrounds. The initiative aims to encourage sports activities among the youth and promote overall fitness.
The development of cycling lanes has been under discussion for years, with surveys already conducted. Last year, during a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, representatives of the Cycling Association of Himachal Pradesh suggested exploring surrounding forest areas for potential cycling trails.
