This was the Dalai Lama's third public appearance this month. On October 4, he had given religious sermons on the Generation of Bodhichita (semkye) and the Conferment of Bodhisattva Vows (jangdom), followed by a short sermon on 100 deities of Tushita Heaven (gaden lhagyama) to Taiwanese and other foreign nationals at the main Tibetan Temple.

On October 8, the Dalai Lama had attended a long-life prayer offered to him by the Australian Tibetan National Association, Tibetan Communities Europe and the Tibetan Youth Congress.
