There is a strong possibility that the strategically important Darcha-Leh road, which has been closed due to heavy snowfall, will be reopened to vehicular traffic by May 15. This information was shared during a virtual meeting held recently to assess the status of the route’s reopening efforts.

Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul-Spiti Rahul Kumar chaired the meeting, which was also attended by Deputy Commissioner of Leh, Santosh, and key officials from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Representing the Leh side was Colonel Guleria from BRO’s Project Himank, while Major Tejas from the 70 RCC attended the meeting on behalf of the Lahaul side.

The DC explained that the area near Baralacha Pass had recently received fresh snowfall, which worsened the road’s condition and rendered it unfit for travel. Despite these challenges, the BRO teams have been working tirelessly to restore the route. “The BRO is making every effort to ensure that the road is cleared and is safe for driving. Given the pace of work and current conditions, we are optimistic that the Darcha-Leh road will reopen by May 15,” said DC Rahul Kumar.

The Darcha-Leh route is not only vital for strategic and defence purposes but also facilitates supply of essential goods to local communities. With the onset of the tourist season, many visitors are eagerly awaiting the reopening of the route that connects Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh via some of the world’s highest mountain passes.

The DC also issued an advisory to all travellers, especially tourists, to avoid using the route until an official notification is released by the Leh administration and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Lahaul. “Travelling on this road before it is officially opened poses serious risks. We urge everyone to stay updated through official channels and comply with safety guidelines issued by the DDMA,” he added.

The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and further updates will be provided as progress continues on clearing the snow on the route. Travellers and locals have been advised to remain cautious and patient as efforts are underway to ensure their safety.
