DAV Public School, New Shimla, established their supremacy in the eighth Major Udai Singh Memorial inter-school quiz competition hosted on Saturday by Army Public School (APS), Dagshai, while the host school emerged runners-up in a closely contested event.
APS Ambala secured third place after being selected for the final round from among 12 schools. Six schools qualified through a preliminary round, which featured eight segments designed to test students’ knowledge, observation and presence of mind. Ravi Sharma, a quizmaster known for his acumen in university-level competitions, conducted the quiz.
The event was graced by Colonel KKK Singh, father of Major Udai Singh and his wife, Sudha Singh. Col Singh applauded the winners and urged the students to work hard and make the most of their time at APS Dagshai.
The annual event is held as a tribute to Major Udai Singh, a 1992 batch alumnus who was a Shaurya Chakra (SC) and Sewa Medal (SM) awardee. He made the ultimate sacrifice in 2003 during counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
In November 2003, Major Singh’s unit was deployed in Rajouri district, tasked with dismantling terrorist networks. On November 29, while leading a search-and-destroy operation, his team encountered militants in a dense forest. In the ensuing fight, the officer was severely injured but continued to engage the militants, killing one and wounding another while rescuing an injured comrade. He succumbed to his injuries later. He was posthumously awarded the SC for his gallantry.
Principal Ritambra Ghai congratulated the winners and encouraged students to remain inquisitive.
