Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsBJP MP Rajeev Bhardwaj from Kangra parliamentary constituency expressed deep concern over the devastation caused by heavy rains and landslides in Himachal Pradesh, particularly in Chamba district, calling it one of the worst natural calamities witnessed in his lifetime.
Addressing the media in Chamba the MP said roads have been completely washed away, communication networks severely disrupted and thousands of Manimahesh Yatra pilgrims remain stranded. “It will take years to rebuild Chamba and restore normalcy,” he remarked.
The MP stressed that in this hour of crisis, political blame-games must be avoided and both ruling and opposition parties, along with NGOs and social organisations, should work shoulder-to-shoulder. “This disaster cannot be tackled by the government alone,” he said, urging voluntary organisations and philanthropists to step forward with relief material.
He said the BJP organisation has already mobilised its district units to assess road conditions and prepare reports to be sent to the party’s state and central leadership. Relief material including ration, clothes, and utensils will start reaching Chamba within two days, he assured.
On the issue of poor telecom connectivity, the MP revealed that BSNL and other networks had collapsed during the disaster, leaving stranded families in distress. He said he personally contacted telecom officials in Delhi, after which services were restored temporarily, but emphasised the need for a permanent solution.
The MP also attacked the state government, citing the recent CAG report that highlighted Himachal Pradesh’s failure to utilise Rs 1,050 crore sanctioned by the Centre for 40 development projects. “This lack of vision forced the Centre’s funds to lapse. It is a shame for Himachal,” he said.
Raising cultural and tourism concerns, the MP lamented that historic temples of Chamba such as Lakshmi Narayan Mandir and Devi Kothi have not been included in the Centre’s PRASAD or Swadesh Darshan schemes, solely due to the state government’s failure to send required resolutions. “Chamba, with its rich heritage, deserves priority under tourism schemes,” he added.
While refraining from political confrontation in the wake of tragedy, he underlined that the BJP remains committed to service beyond politics. He said party MPs from Himachal, under the leadership of former CM Jairam Thakur and Union Minister Anurag Thakur, would approach the Centre to seek a special relief package for Chamba and Kangra.
“Thousands of families are in pain. As their representative, my foremost duty is to share their grief, stand with them in this hour, and ensure the Centre extends all possible support,” he said.
