Dharampur farmers get fair returns with direct sales

The state government’s ambitious HP Shiva Project continues to bring prosperity to farmers in the Dharmpur subdivision of Mandi district, particularly in the Chhuighat and Churu-ra-Balh areas. Under this initiative, the third consignment of kinnow and mosambi from these regions was successfully delivered to Reliance Company’s store in Rajpura, Punjab, on Friday.

Dharampur MLA Chander Shekhar expressed his happiness over the achievement, calling it a reflection of farmers’ dedication and the government’s policies. He said the HP Shiva Project has provided a new identity to farmers while strengthening their economic stability.

“This success is the outcome of Dharmpur’s hardworking farmers and the visionary approach of the state government. The HP Shiva Project has empowered farmers and given them direct access to lucrative markets. Such initiatives will inspire other regions of the state and help Himachal scale new heights in horticulture,” said MLA Chander Shekhar.

The sale process of the produce was coordinated by Tejinder, the HP Shiva Project Coordinator for Dharmpur, and Ritesh Bhardwaj, GOC president, at the Reliance store in Rajpura. Of a total 1,650 quintals of kinnow, 1,474 quintals were selected and sold at a rate of Rs 39/kilogram.

The process was monitored by Dr Anil Thakur, subject matter specialist from the department of horticulture. He noted the initiative ensures farmers receive better prices as their produce now reaches consumers directly.

“Compared to the traditional mandi system, this model is more transparent, convenient and profitable. Farmers are now getting fair returns, improving their income levels and making them more self-reliant and market-oriented,” said Dr Thakur.

The HP Shiva Project not only provides technical support and modern horticultural practices but also creates new marketing opportunities by connecting farmers directly with major retail chains. This has enhanced transparency in the selling process, reduced dependence on middlemen and increased farmers’ income.

The successful sale of kinnow from Dharmpur to Reliance’s Rajpura outlet stands as a testament to the project’s impact — transforming traditional horticulture into a sustainable, profitable and forward-looking enterprise for Himachal Pradesh’s farming community.
