Dharamsala: 3-day CUHP seminar to mark World Earth Day concludes

Three-day seminar to mark World Earth Day concluded at the Department of Environmental Sciences, Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP), Shahpur campus, today.

The seminar was inaugurated by CUHP Vice-Chancellor SP Bansal. The Department of Environmental Sciences had invited a number of scientists and professors, including Dehradun Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology Director Dr Kalachand Sain, former Chief Conservator of Forest Dr RS Jasrotia and Prof R Rampal from Jammu Department of Environment Sciences University.

On the occasion, Dehradun WIHG Director Dr Kalachand Sain gave information on awareness about machine learning for semi-automatic interpretation of subsurface geologic features from 3D seismic data. He also talked about the upcoming new techniques and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in disaster management.

Dr Jasrotia talked about the NGT (National Green Tribunal) Environmental Justice in India and its challenges, Constitution of India and Indian judicial system.

CUHP School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Dean Prof AK Mahajan welcomed the guests at the seminar. Other faculty members of the department, Prof Deepak Pant, Dr Anurag Linda, Dr Ankit Tandon and Dr Dilbag Rana, along with research scholars and students of MSc Environmental Sciences, were present.

Topics such as disaster management, earthquake, avalanches and landslide, along with its mitigation measures, were also discussed by Dr Kalachand Sain in the lecture series. He highlighted the use of meteorological data, hydrological data and seismological data in disaster management. Prof Rampal briefed about solid waste management. He also discussed about eco-friendly techniques such as vermicomposting and conversion of petrol vehicle into electric vehicle. —
