The state government is committed to promoting sports and supporting sportspersons across Himachal Pradesh, Technical Education Minister Rajesh Dharmani said while inaugurating the 48th Inter-College Athletics Meet in Bilaspur on Monday. He announced that the government has increased the long-pending diet money for athletes — raising it to Rs 300 per day for state-level athletes and Rs 500 per day for national-level athletes. Around 500 men and women athletes from 36 colleges across the state are participating in the three-day event.
Dharmani highlighted that Renuka Thakur has brought immense pride to Himachal Pradesh with her outstanding performance in the Cricket World Cup. In recognition of her achievements, the state government has awarded her Rs 1 crore and will soon offer her a government job. He added that kabaddi players from the state have also excelled nationally, and the government is preparing substantial awards and incentives for them as well.
The minister noted that, for the first time, a national-level handball tournament was organised at Ghumarwin in Bilaspur district. Girls from the region showcased exceptional talent and gained national recognition. He said such initiatives will not only inspire young athletes but also accelerate sports development across the state.
PS Katwal, Principal of Government College Bilaspur, former MLA Bambar Thakur and other dignitaries were present at the occasion.
